Ethiopia jails editor whose paper challenged Zenawi

Committee to Protect Journalists CPJ   http://cpj.org/

New York, February 1, 2010—An Ethiopian judge sentenced a journalist to prison on Friday in connection with a January 2008 column that criticized Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s statements about religious affairs in Ethiopia, according to local journalists.  Federal High Court Judge Mohammed Omar sentenced Editor Ezedin Mohamed of the Muslim-oriented newspaper Al-Quds to one year in prison. The precise charges were not immediately available but were related to a January 30, 2008, column that came in response to Zenawi’s interview with The Guardian of London that month, according to CPJ sources.

The Al-Quds column challenged Zenawi’s characterization of his country as “Orthodox Christian Ethiopia,” one source said. Mohamed has begun serving his sentence at Kality Prison outside the capital, Addis Ababa, sources said.

“The jailing of Ezedin Mohamed is another example of Ethiopia’s intolerance of independent and critical voices,” said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Tom Rhodes. “It is high time for Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to demonstrate his commitment to democratic values by ending the practice of imprisoning journalists.”

Mohamed is the fifth journalist imprisoned in Ethiopia, which is the second worst jailer of journalists in Africa, according to CPJ research. Only Eritrea jails more.

The Ideal Personality of the Muslim

The ideal Muslim character is distinct and balanced. The Muslim is the embodiment of the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah (sayings, actions and the approvals of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). He follows the teachings of the Book of Allah (i.e. Qur'an) and the example of the Prophet Muhammad in all affairs, relations, and situations - starting with his relationship with his Lord, his own self, his family and the people around him.

The following is a brief overview of some qualities of the ideal Muslim personality...Read full story

AlQuds-Newspaper

Al-Qudus Newspaper editor Ato. Ezedin Mohammed was sentenced for one year and sent to Qality prison. Fr.29.01.2010
Ato Ezedin was sued for his report on the controversial draft that was presented by ministry of education. Since the draft was rejected by Muslim scholars as well as Ethiopian Muslims the court decision was a shocking news.
As many observers Indicated Ato. Ezedin was within the boundary of freedom of speech but such kind of despicable ruling is nothing but a deliberate attempt to silence Muslim writers and journalists.

20 January 2010

Nairobi — Senior Muslim clerics on Wednesday declared their intention to sue the state for the colossal damage and death that resulted after last Friday's demonstration in Nairobi.

Already the clerics have contacted a Mombasa based legal firm, Mohammed Balala and Company's Advocates to prepare legal procedures required for the case against Attorney General Amos Wako, Internal Security minister George Saitoti, Nairobi Province PPO Anthony Kibuchi, Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) head Nicholas Kamwede.

Nominated MP Sheikh Mohammed Dor told Nation on the sidelines of a press conference attended by more than nine Muslims organizations that they will seek damages of millions of shillings following colossal damage of property belonging to Kenyans of different religion.

"We shall compel the government to compensate damages that occurred during the Friday demonstration and we shall not be asking for what happened to Muslims alone but other traders and motorists who lost property during the mayhem," he said.

Separate sources also told Nation that Muslims legislators are also expected to meet over the same at Jamia Mosque in Nairobi and by yesterday most of the members confirmed attending the meeting where they will be briefed on the decision.
