The controversy surrounding the legacy of Sheikh Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, the head of the Al-Azhar mosque and university who died last week, is more complex than many would expect.

Some of his critics viewed him as the theological functionary through which the state marketed not only its brand of Islam, but also other government-sanctioned social and political policies. His supporters championed him as a reformist, particularly for women's rights.
 
But most crucially, his sudden death has reignited the centuries-old battle over the independence of Al-Azhar, regarded as Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning.Unlike Catholicism and Shia Islam, Sunni Islam was established and maintained through decentralised governance. It knows no clergy and reveres no saints; in essence, Sunni Islam has maintained that there is no interlocutor between man and the divine.

Grand Sheikh

When the Al-Azhar mosque and university were first established in the late 10th century, they became the centre of study for the Quran and Arabic language, drawing scholars from throughout the Muslim Empire. ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች ባለፉት 19 አመታት ውስጥ የአገሪቱ ሕዝቦች አንድ አካል ሆነው በፖለቲካ፣ በኢኮኖሚ፣ በባሕልና በማህበራዊ እንቅስቃሴ ንቁ ተሳታፊና ተጠቃሚ ለመሆን መብቃታቸውን የኢትዮጵያ እስልምና ጉዳዮች ጠቅላይ ምክር ቤት ፕሬዚዳንት ገለጹ፡፡

የጠቅላይ ምክር ቤቱ ፕሬዚዳንት ሸህ አህመዲን ሸህ አብዱላሂ በሚሌንየም አዳራሽ የነቢዩ መሐመድን የልደት በዓል ለመዘከር የሙስሊሙ ሕብረተሰብ ባካሄደው ስብሰባ እንደተናገሩት እስልምና ወደ ኢትዮጵያ የገባው ከ1 ሺህ 400 አመታት በፊት ሲሆን ከሌሎች እምነቶች ጋር በሰላምና በመቻቻል እየኖረ ይገኛል፡፡

የነብዩ መሐመድ ልደት በየአመቱ በዚህ ወር በዓለም ደረጃ በየመስጊዱ ታሪካቸውና ውዳሴአቸው እየተነበበ ተከታታይ እንደሚከበር የጠቅላይ ምክር ቤቱ ፕሬዚዳንት አመልክተዋል፡፡በስብሰባው የተገኙት ሙስሊሞች የአዲስ አበባ እስልምና ጉዳዮች ለሚያስገነባቸው የልማት ሕንፃዎች የገንዘብ ልገሳና የቃል መግቢያ ሰነድ በመሙላት ለምክር ቤቱ አስረክበዋል፡፡በዚሁ ስብሰባ ላይ የተገኙት ሙስሊሞች መንዙማ፣ የተለያዩ ግጥሞችና የኪነጥበብ ትርኢት ታይተዋል፡፡

በኢትዮጵያ ሁሉም ብሔረሰቦች እውቅና እንዲያገኙ፣ ሁሉም ዕምነቶች ተቻችለውና ዕኩል መብት አግኝተው እንዲንቀሳቀሱ እና የሸሪአ ፍርድ ቤት እውቅና አግኝቶ ቀጣይ እንዲሆን ጠቅላይ ሚኒስትር መለስ ዜናዊ ባደረጉት አስተዋፅኦ በአንደኛ ደረጃ ከሙስሊሙ ሕብረተሰብ ሽልማት እንዲሰጣቸው ተደርጓል፡፡ በመቀጠልም ዶክተር ሼህ ሁሴን መሐመድ አላሙዲን በአገሪቱ ልማት ውስጥ እያደረጉ ባሉት አስተዋፅኦ በሁለተኛነት ተሸላሚ ሆነዋል፡፡ ቀጥሎም የአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርስቲ ፕሬዚደንት ፕሮፌሰር እንድሪያስ እሸቴ መንዙማ እና የእስላም ባህል ላይ የፒኤችዲ ፕሮግራም እንዲጀመርና የሙስሊም ተማሪዎች መብት እንዲጠበቅ ባደረጉት አስተዋፅኦ እንዲሁም ሌሎች የሙስሊሙ እምነት መሪዎች ደግሞ የእስልምና እምነት ወደ ትውልድ እንዲተላለፍ የተለያዩ ትምህርት ሰጪ መፃሕፍትን በማዘጋጀትና ቁርአን እንዲስፋፋ በማድረጋቸው ሽልማት ተሰጥቷቸዋል፡፡

(The New York Times) CAIRO — Sheik Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, Egypt’s chief religious official and leader of Al Azhar, the oldest and most prestigious center of learning in the Sunni Muslim world, died Wednesday during a visit to Saudi Arabia, Egyptian state media reported. He was 81.

The cause was apparently a heart attack. His death was confirmed in a statement by Al Azhar.

For more than a quarter century Mr. Tantawi was at the nexus of government and religion in Egypt, the Arab world’s largest country, working with President Hosni Mubarak’s government to try to enforce a moderate interpretation of Islam.
