Egypt National Bank to invest USD 150mln in farm project in Ethiopia

The National Bank of Egypt is poised to invest USD 150 million in an Egyptian farm project here, it was learnt. The bank opened what becomes the second foreign bank representative office in Ethiopia on Tuesday after Germany’s Commerz Bank in an official ceremony held at Sheraton Addis in the presence of high-ranking government officials from both countries. The representative office will, in its first venture, invest USD 150 million in an Egyptian farm project on a 20,000 ha of land, Ahmed Dowek, the head of the representative office told The Reporter.

Aside from investing in various Egyptian projects in Ethiopia, the representative office with help strengthen relations between banks operating in Ethiopia and the National Bank of Egypt, according to the head of the representative office...Read more with Comments

In my teenage years, I became very involved in the church and was studying at a small Bible college in my hometown with the intention of eventually enrolling in Bob Jones University. I was learning to read the Bible in Hebrew and Greek and was very interested in textual criticism of the Bible. In doing so, I realized there were many inconsistencies and contradictions. not only in the text, but in the message preached by Jesus himself and what I had been taught all my life based on the writings of Paul.  I then realized the Bible was not the inerrant Word of God as I had always been taught. Ethiopia jails editor whose paper challenged Zenawi

 New York, February 1, 2010—An Ethiopian judge sentenced a journalist to prison on Friday in connection with a January 2008 column that criticized Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s statements about religious affairs in Ethiopia, according to local journalists.  Federal High Court Judge Mohammed Omar sentenced Editor Ezedin Mohamed of the Muslim-oriented newspaper Al-Quds to one year in prison. The precise charges were not immediately available but were related to a January 30, 2008, column that came in response to Zenawi’s interview with The Guardian of London that month, according to CPJ sources.

The Al-Quds column challenged Zenawi’s characterization of his country as “Orthodox Christian Ethiopia,” one source said. Mohamed has begun serving his sentence at Kality Prison outside the capital, Addis Ababa, sources said.

“The jailing of Ezedin Mohamed is another example of Ethiopia’s intolerance of independent and critical voices,” said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Tom Rhodes. “It is high time for Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to demonstrate his commitment to democratic values by ending the practice of imprisoning journalists.”

Mohamed is the fifth journalist imprisoned in Ethiopia, which is the second worst jailer of journalists in Africa, according to CPJ research. Only Eritrea jails more.
