R A M A D A N

  Ramadan, a month of remembrance
Ramadan is a time when Muslims remember those less fortunate than themselves. The blessed month inculcates a sense of belonging to one community, ummah, as Muslims throughout the world fast together and experience the pangs of hunger and thirst. It also is a month of spiritual upliftment that brings one closer to God through fasting and prayers.

The Month of Sha'baan

Sha’baan is the name of the (eighth) month, and it is so called because in this month the Arabs used to disperse (tasha’’aba) in search of water, or it was said that they dispersed to carry out raids and forays. Or it was said that it is so called because it sha’aba (branches out or emerges) i.e., it appears between the months of Rajab and Ramadaan. The plural forms of the word Sha’baan are Sha’baanaat and Sha’aabeen. Fasting in Sha’baan

‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allaah fasting for an entire month except in Ramadaan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha’baan.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 1833; Muslim, no. 1956).

According to a report narrated by Muslim (no. 1957), “He used to fast all of Sha’baan, he used to fast all but a little of Sha’baan.”

AU peacekeepers in Somalia need help

The lack of a global response to the Somali crisis has created fertile ground for threats to regional peace in Eastern Africa and the rest of the continent, the president of the African Flags representing some of the 30 nations taking part in the African Union Summit flutter in Kampala, Uganda, Monday.Union Commission said.

African leaders believe Somalia has been largely forgotten by the U.N. Security Council, which is primarily responsible for peacekeeping, Jean Ping said Monday.

The council "had an obligation to send a peacekeeping mission to Somalia to help bring back stability," Ping said. "The international community appears to be only preoccupied with the issue of piracy off Somalia. We are all members of the U.N., and we pay our contributions to the U.N."

Egypt's Hosni Mubarak (right) looks on as Meles Zenawi reads documents at the G-8 Summit in L'Aquila, Italy, in July 2009.

CAIRO - Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abu Gheit was feeling positive about talks held in Addis Ababa between Ethiopian officials and himself and Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Fayza Abul Naga.

The talks focused on the allocation of the waters of the Nile, among other bilateral issues.  According to Abul Gheit, the discussion, filled in a lot of details and allowed each side to gain a greater appreciation for the others position.

Speaking on Egyptian television, he said, [Nile water sharing] is a long term issue and we will continue discussions to build a common basis for understanding. However, this doesnt mean that bilateral relations between Egypt and Ethiopia have to suffer. We will continue to strengthen all dimensions of this relationship, particularly when it comes to economic and commercial matters.
